Lights, camera...email

It’s well known that websites are the way forward for any business, providing as they do a unique platform on which you can promote your company’s skills, strengths and branding. Email marketing – sending out regular e-newsletters to subscribers to your website - takes you one step further down this road to greater online brand exposure.

Allowing you to actively engage with your database of contacts, telling them what new features you’ve added to your business, or promoting the content you’ve written to drive more valuable traffic to your site in a short and sweet weekly, fortnightly or monthly bulletin, is an excellent way to gain credibility online as an expert in your field.

Not only that – it’s a unique way to find out what makes your subscribers tick. You can check how many recipients have opened your emails, what links they’ve liked by the number of times each of your links has been clicked on…and what they didn’t like, so you can know better next time.

Managed email marketing is one of the cheapest and most effective ways available to shout about what your business is doing, and reminding your customers that you’re still around, enabling you to win crucial repeat business. But keep these quick tips in mind before you start, as it’s very easy to go wrong!

-  Always keep your newsletter text short, simple and easy to read. You’re writing short news bulletins to notify customers on changes to your business or offers that you’re running, not a summary of the Bible – prohetic and far-seeing though your business may be

-  Don’t flood your readers with too much information. The rule of three is a valuable one to follow – don’t ever include more than three elements, or stories, in a newsletter, or you’ll lose your readership pretty quickly

-  B2b email marketing requires a very different style of writing than if you were addressing a consumer audience. Keep your audience in mind constantly, and put yourselves in their shoes – what would they want to read? Is what you’re writing relevant for your target readers? If not, it’s time to hit the delete button…

-  Include regular incentives and competitions to keep your readers interested and engaged. For example,  offer an aspect of your business to a couple of your users for free for a certain period of time. This is something you should look to do at least once a month, if applicable – auto-responder offers for new subscribers should definitely go onto your to-do list.
